My child missed the STAAR Math test in 5th grade, what will happen in middle school? Can he retake it?
The answer, from Senior Accountability Manager Richard Blair:
The State of Texas this year only had one administration of the STAAR Grade 5 and 8 Reading and Math tests. Because this year only one administration was given, the State suspended the requirement of passing the math and reading tests to be promoted to the next grade level. STAAR testing results were not used to make promotion decisions.
Once your child is in attendance at his new middle school, an assessment may be given to him since no data exists on his STAAR testing. This is an individual campus decision. This data may be used to help place your child in appropriate courses. The middle school should be able to give you more information on additional, preliminary assessments that may be given to make sure your child is placed in the correct classes.

When will results be online for students who took the STAAR EOC in July?
The STAAR EOC results are expected to be posted on or before August 10. This is according to the state calendar and is dependent on the state posting the information.
I didn’t receive my child’s test scores in the mail, what should I do?
If you didn’t receive your child’s test scores, or if the report you received was incomplete, please contact the school where your child was tested. Office staff should be available to assist you and provide your child’s test results.

When will I know if my child met passing standards on STAAR?
The parent of a fifth-grader received her son’s raw scores on STAAR. She writes: I was curious: are the statistics released yet for the test? I wanted to know what percentiles he fell in for the test he took. The answer, from HISD Assistant Superintendent Carla Stevens:
The state is not releasing any standards or statistics regarding the results of the test until the standards are set later this fall. They have indicated that official parent reports will be sent out in January indicating your child’s actual performance as far as meeting standards. We do not have any additional information at this time, but wanted to be transparent with parents and provide everything that we have received so far from the state.

When will I receive STAAR test results in the mail?
STAAR results are in the final stages of printing and will be mailed out Thursday, June 21. The letters should begin arriving at students’ homes on Saturday, June 23, and continue through the following week.
Elementary students will receive raw scores, which will not indicate pass/fail as those standards have yet to be set by TEA. Students who took an End-of-Course exams will receive their results along with information on how to interpret them.
If your child failed an EOC course and/or EOC exam, you should have been contacted by a staff member from your campus to discuss summer school options and the retest schedule. If your child barely passed an EOC exam, he/she should consider retaking the EOC exam because a higher score on a single test can help raise a student’s cumulative score.
How will summer school help a student who has failed an EOC?
A student asks:
I am in ninth grade and I have been told to go to summer school because I failed a STAAR test … if I go to summer school, how is that going to help me? And if I don’t go what are the consequences?
Answer from HISD’s High School Office:
It is very true that you need to pass the STAAR End of Course (EOC) tests in order to graduate. While you do not need to pass it to be promoted to 10th grade (assuming you have enough credits), there are 15 tests that you will need to take and pass while in high school. If you do not go to summer school and pass the test in July, you will have at least 6 tests that you will need to pass the following year. This will make things more challenging for you. There is also the risk, depending on your results, that you may need to repeat the course. Obviously, you want to avoid this.
Summer school should offer some intensive support for you on targeted skills that you may have struggled with. The intention of summer school is to strengthen your skills and make it easier for you to pass the EOC.

How will parents receive STAAR test results?
Test scores will be mailed to students’ homes in coming weeks, and schools are in the process of contacting parents whose children may need summer school. If you are concerned that your child needs summer school or if you need information about STAAR EOC retesting dates, please contact your child’s school.
